Synopsis of Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) Multi-Drive System Line-Ups

Situation: A world leading company specializing in the custom design and manufacture of a complete line of Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) used for large-scale industrial excavation projects was dealing with high demand. The company looked to contract out some related Drive Line-Up design and build work. The sizes of the TBMs ranged from 6 meters (diameter) to 11 meters (diameter), and were used for a variety of types of excavation projects. Brock Solutions' Role: Custom designed and built a series of 5, 6, and 8 Tunnel Boring Machine Multi-Drive Line-Ups for “turnkey” installation on TBMs, with complete line ups including enclosure assemblies; power and protective gear; multi systems (Main Control, Liquid Cooling/Climate Control; Monitoring and Display); and communications/network interfaces. Brock's scope also included conducting full-scale pre-delivery set up and testing. Unique Challenges: Height and depth restrictions Brock had to accommodate so the Multi-Drive System Line-Ups could be mounted in the various-sized TBMs Customized rebuilding of the enclosures was required so that water pumps specified by the TBM manufacturer could be installed into the drive cabinets
