Synopsis of Inline Finishing Bar Mill Control System Packaged Control Room (PCR)
- Situation: A leading Canadian steel maker that operated a bar mini-mill looked to expand their production capabilities and increase performance. The company identified that increases in bar production and improvements to quality of output could be achieved by replacing old finishing and cross-country mill stands with a new inline finishing bar mill.
- The Requirement: Specialized engineering services covering:
- Supply and design/implementation of all required AC motors, AC drives, and related systems
- Supply and design of all electrical components and architectures
- Supply and design of Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), Mill Master Controllers, and operator desks
- Design, development, and deployment of a Manufacturing Execution System (MES) application
- Design and build of a Packaged Control Room required to power-up the complete Inline Finishing Bar Mill
- The Role of Brock Solutions' Panel Shop: Assemble/build, perform pre-shipment testing, and ship and install the PCR.

- The PCR: 100’ long x 10’ wide x 11’ 4”. 3 sections:
- Rectifier section
- Inverter section
- Braking section
- Unique Challenge: Customized BUS Distribution System: The project required Brock to fabricate and test a customized BUS distribution system that included two Delta/Wye rectifiers to convert incoming AC supply into DC, which acts as a common DC BUS supply for mill and shear inverters.
