Synopsis of Southwest Airline's Inline EDS (Explosive Detection System) Baggage Handling System Project
- Situation: Southwest Airlines contracted a team consisting of a leading conveyor OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) and Brock Solutions to design, develop, and implement an inline baggage handling system and associated controls system to automate the movement of bags and all related security screening operations at the airline’s terminal at Dallas Love Field Airport.
- Issue TSA (Transportation Security Administration) compliance.
- Requirement: Inline EDS (Explosive Detection System) Baggage Handling System complete with simulation modelling during the design phase of project to ensure the system as designed was capable of handling the airport’s peak bag volumes, and simulation testing to validate the design concept at the project design phase.
- Main Technology Components:Allen-Bradley ControlLogix L63 PLC platform, RSView32 HMI System, PanelView Plus 600, PanelView Plus 1000, SmartSort monitoring and reporting software, ControlNet, DeviceNet, Ethernet, Serial, Microsoft SQL Server RDBMS (Relational Database Management System), Crystal Reports.

- Brock Solutions' Role: Developing a simulation model to validate the design, throughput capacity, error-handling capabilities, and staffing requirements for the system; designing, developing, and deploying an automation controls system based on a distributed I/O architecture; fabricating various types of electrical control panels; configuring multiple networks and communication protocols to interface various pieces of equipment to the control system PLCs; programming PLCs; designing and programming HMIs(Human Machine Interfaces); programming upper-level software applications to perform monitoring and reporting functions; and performing on-site installation.
