Synopsis of Continuous Casting Operations Upgrade Project

Situation: Operations for casting steel at a leading Canadian steel maker's Hamilton facility involved the on-going use of two continuous casters. Issues: The technology platform for the caster operations was based on an obsolete, centralized drive control system that was both unsound and non-serviceable, leaving the manufacturer's continuous casting operations vulnerable to process interruptions, downtime, and unacceptable financial losses. Requirement: Continuous Casting Operations Drives and Controls Upgrade. Technology: SAFphire controller, DD312 DC drives, Allen-Bradley/Rockwell ControlLogix PLC, Ethernet, Distributed Data Connection Services (DDCS).
